I have never really taken part of school theatre until I came to Cheshire Academy. I had done a lot of music and some theatre outside of school, because I was too shy and self-conscious to perform in front of people that I knew. Since coming to CA, I have been in Les Mis, the Spring Improv Show, the Importance of Being Earnest, Footloose, 25 Squared, and now in the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. I also took the dramatic arts class last year as a sophomore. I have always leaned towards musicals because of my love for singing and the excitement that music brings to the performance, but I have learned the beauty of plays, monologues, improv, and devise theatre since coming here.
I love performing more than anything. As someone who can tend to be naturally shy, theatre constantly pushes me past my comfort zone both physically and mentally, making me not only a stronger performer, but a stronger person as well. I love theatre for it's ability to test boundaries and make everyone involved come together as one in order to create a story, and make the audience feel and understand the message that the director is trying to convey. I find everything aspect of theatre to be fascinating, from how lighting affects mood, to how the costumes can speak a lot about a certain character with just a glance, to how every single person has a different interpretation of the script/plot, and how chemistry on stage creates strong bonds within people off stage. I love theatre because it always allows me to learn something new about myself and helps me to understand others, not only in the cast but in the world and different experiences from the story, so I gain a better perspective of the world around me.
I find that what makes theatre so amazing can sometimes be what makes theatre challenging. For example, although being able to get out of your comfort zone can be freeing, at times it is really hard to let go of yourself and get into a certain character and portray the emotional state they are in, or to not mind feeling silly while doing improv or theatre exercises. Another thing that can be a challenge is gathering everyone's opinions on a scene or theme of the show. Everyone has different interpretations on a character or what they feel is the message that the playwright is trying to convey, and how they feel that message should be shown in front of an audience. This makes for very important and eye-opening conversations, but is something we all need to work through even when everyone's opinions are different.
I want to learn more character work, and dive into the world that the director and script has put in front of me. One of my goals is to be able to understand the character I am portraying to the absolute best of my ability, and make that character someone in the audience feels helped them to understand the importance of the scene or show. Another goal is to learn the world of directors and directing, because that is not something that I have a lot of experience in and would love to explore. While learning how to direct well and what types of theatre there is to direct, I want to direct something, and be able to show my interpretation of the characters and plot.
Theatre has limitless creativity and is constantly producing new ideas, and in that ever-changing environment I have found that it is the one of the things that always remains beautiful and gives us all the chance to grow.
